Native Group Calls for Mass Disruption
of Government and Churches

Vancouver:

Last Friday, May 11, thirty five aboriginal survivors of Indian Residential Schools occupied the office of the Indian Residential Schools Resolution Canada (IRSRC) in downtown Vancouver to protest the refusal of the government of Canada and the Catholic, Anglican and United Church to identify and release the buried remains of more than 50,000 children who died in residential schools run by these organizations.

We, the organizers of this occupation, have seen no indication that the government, these churches, or the IRSRC officials we met with are willing to disclose the truth or release the remains of children killed at their hands.

Accordingly, we, the Friends of the Disappeared, have decided to escalate our campaign of civil disobedience.

We therefore call upon all aboriginal people, residential school survivors and concerned people to immediately occupy and disrupt government and church facilities across Canada, and continue to do so until the remains of the disappeared residential school children are repatriated without conditions to their homes.

We also call upon aboriginal people and residential school survivors to refuse to cooperate with any government or church-sponsored "investigation" into deaths in Indian residential schools, and instead to help us launch an international Peoples' Inquiry into these deaths and crimes of genocide in Canada.

Further communiques will be forthcoming.
